Good day all.

Just joined your merry band of VL1500 owners. My name is Pierre and I am based in Cape Town, South Africa. I have a 2000 model VL with 9800 miles on it and i love it.

I really need your collective expertise please. Bike stood for 2 years . I rode it to my home from where I collected it which was around 1000 miles, no problems.

i decided to customise it like i wanted it. changed the pipes and removed that small air restrictor at the air inlet underneath the air box.

Work done and having set the compression cable thingy that causes it not to start sometimes, i set off. Hook 3rd gear and it starts sputtering and eventually dying.

Get it started and now it starts misfiring and as soon as I put it in 1st gear and accelerate it gets worse and dies.

Throws a little black smoke periodically on the one exhaust on turning thottle in idle. But very little..

There was absolutely nothing wrong with it beforehand!

Took it to a bike mechanic who cleaned the carbs, checked tank and pump. Still no improvement and he cannot find any probable cause going down the logical possibilities.

Now the guy has contacted someone who is apparently an expert who tells him the head must come off as there is a type valve fitted in the cam that regulates compression

in the piston chamber. This is not the normal inlet/exhaust valves but apparently in the cam and has become stuck. Don´t know the mechanic that well and feel u guys may know something.

So please, if there is a VL1500 guru on this forum, could you perhaps just confirm the existence of said
