Robert,
You can actually remove the side covers to reach the battery, instead of lifting the seat. In regards to seat removal, ive dont this many, many times, and the only is to dissassemble it. First you remove the struts, which are connected to the wire harness, then unbolt the seat from there. Its not a simple process and I highly reccomend not taking off the seat if you absolutly dont have to.
