Suzuki 1976 GT -750 clutch problems

Recently I picked up an old Water Buffalo.
The problem I´m having is getting the clutch to disengage from the tranny. Originaly when I pulled in the clutch, kicked it in gear, the bike lurched forward, squealed the tire & then stalled. I took the clutch pack apart and everything looked fine. I took 1 of my parts bikes (a 1973) apart and found a washer behind the clutch hub that my 76 DIDN´T have. After installing the washer on my 76 and reassembling everything, I still have a similar problem. Now when I pull in the clutch, kick it in gear, it doesn´t squeal the tire (meaning some slippage is happening)but it still lurches forward and stalls. Has anyone experienced anything similar??????? How did you correct the problem??????
