Exhaust Modification

I bought my SS on may 2007 and have been enjoying it since. Like the handling alot much better than any jap bike, although the guys I ride with, in their Honda/Suzuki & Yamaha move faster. They have recommended I can gain a couple of HP if I modify my exhaust system, and get that rev´ sound too. Should I do it?
