Someone tried to break into a 900ss i just bought...

two weeks after buying a used 900ss, someone took a screwdriver to my ignition and jacked it up. my key does not fit inside anymore and i cannot start my bike... someone told me that i need a "red key" in order to reprogram the bike and install a new ignition unit... otherwise i would have to replace all the electricals. does anyone know it this is true? i have a 2002 model ss.
