High temperature reading on a Duc se 900 2002

Just bought a 900 ss 2002 and noticed the temp gauge reading as too high just a few minutes after a ride. It´s this normal or should I be concern? I have not done a tune up on it just yet. There is a small radiator in the front leading me to suspect maybe low coolant. My monster 600 01 is air cooled so I never had this issue before. Appreciate any advise. Thanks.
