Cam timing

Cant get the cam timing right on er 5.I have used the T mark on the flywheel,lined the cams up according to the IN & EX marks on the sprockets, but I am still getting blowback through the carbs.The valves are definitely not bent.I never stripped the motor so I have no reference.Help anyone?
