I´m about to purchase a Blackbird and I have heard various figures about horsepower differences. The bikes (01, 02, and 03) are identical in every way except color. This is confirmed by every dealer, mechanic, website, and CBR 1100XX resource I have consulted. What I, along with many people believe is where the horsepower is taken. The higher figure (164) is at the flywheel while the lower (153) is at the rear wheel. Obviously the only one most riders would be concerned with is the rear wheel. As most riders know, there is quite a bit of power loss as the power travels from your engine up front to your rear wheel due to friction. Another possible explination is a dyno run done by an independent source and then posted online versus the one done by the factory. Altitude, barometric pressure, different bikes, different dynos, etc. can all affect horsepower by a marginal amount. It is less significant in cars where 3 or 4 horses will not make much of a difference. The minimum to notice any significant performance difference in an automobile is about 15 hp. On bikes, 20-30 hp is the difference between a 600cc and a liter bike. This is why you can have such a margin of error go unnoticed since they do not matter for cars. The best way to find out for yourself though is to ride bikes from the two years. I think you can figure out what you need to do next. |
