I had almost the same problem with my 81 Yamaha XS650. After checking it out, I found that the alternator rotor was bad. It was a well known problem with those bikes. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to find one online at a reasonable price because many places were back ordered on it. I ended up moving and selling my bike before I got it fixed.
