Battery draining while riding

I bought a brand new battery (fully charged) put it in the bike and road it for about 15 miles until it shut off. We hooked jumper cabels up to it and it would run as long as the cabels were hooked up. Got it home and charged the battery again. This time ran it and put a volt meter and watched the volts go down slowly as the bike ran. What is causing the battery to drain with the bike running?
