I own two CM400T 1980 and 1979. I do have both Clymer´s and Honda Shop manual and OEM User´s manual. There is no question you must change both oil and filter. As you suggest, it is better to warm up the oil first after you have leveled up the oil.

You must AVOID any energy saving automotive type oil, because CM400 has a wet clutch as most japanese motorcycles. It is safe, but not mandatory to use JASO certified oil (motorcycle oil).

Personnaly, I use 15W40 Shell Rotella T mineral oil (not synthetic). This is good quality oil, designed for high pressure and high temperatures found in motorcycles or diesel engines. You can save a lot if you buy it in large containers and change as often as you want (minimum every 2000 miles). Mobil One and other known brands are OK too, if you buy 10w40 or 15w40 mineral oil designed for diesel engines.

Otherwise, you can pay double or triple the price for JASO oil, or synthetic oil which will not be any better if you change your oil regularly.

If the oil level is quite low, this engine is likely burning or loosing oil. Check out the level every time you fill out the gas until you are certain to know how serious the problem is, if any.
