CM400 SHIFTING PROBLEMS

My 81 CM400 T does not like to go back into neutral after it is warmed up, and if you go into 2nd gear, it won´t go back to 1st gear. this makes it useless because it dosn´t have the power to take off in 2nd gear. so you are stuck on the side of the road friggin with it.even if you shut it off u can´t get it back to 1st or nuetral. with the clutch lever pulled all the way in, the lever on the tranny will only travel another 1/8 inch or so, so i don´t think it is a cable adjustment issue. if i can´t get it fixed i will part it out or sell it. please help.
