If you are having starting problems it could be your battery, you must have to have a quality battery that is fully charged. If not it won´t let gas into the cylenders of it will let gas in but it will be out of time with the engine. It sounds like the out of time is what is happening to you the same thing was happening to me check this web sight out Dave´s Yamaha XJ page.
