i had the same problem with mine. i have an 82. the cdi almost never goes bad. your best bet is to try testing the stater/magneto. there are three wires that come off of it. when you hook a test lite to the frame and have someone kick it over for you. one line should blink. this line goes to the cdi. another line should light the tester constant. that one goes to the headlight and coil. the last one is ground, and should do nothing. if the one that is supposed to ground. if only one light shows up on the tester. you need to replace the stater coil (magneto). Its not hard to replace, but is is dificult to find the parts. Good luck, and happy riding.
