Just got my first bike

I just got my permit last week and bought a 82 Silverwing on Sunday. I bought it for $800. just over 25,000 miles. I know nothing about bikes and I know that this bike needs work. I´m not sure where to start. Can anyone give me pointers on some things I can tackle myself? I know that I could pay someone else but I know that it could end up costly too. Any advice on any aspect of being a new rider with this bike is apprecaited too!
