Noone answered the question about the oil filter, so I´ll take a shot. The oil filter is not a canister/removeable type. It´s basically a little rectangular stainless mesh screen housed in a rubber frame that sits at the bottom of the crankcase. You want to clean that filter if it hasn´t been clean before...

I´ve got an ´82 cm250. It had 8800 miles on it when I bought it 2 months ago. I´ve put about 1000 miles on it so far. When I changed the oil the 1st time, I decide to check out the oil filter, and I´m glad I did bc it was filthy! It was a fairly straightforward operation. My only suggestions are (1) use a torque wrench and make sure and follow the torque guidelines. I broke one of the crankcase bolts! (2) plan to replace the crankcase gasket if you think it hasn´t already been replaced. I didn´t plan to replace this gasket, and ended up just putting it back together with the fairly damaged original, and it seems to hold oil, but I don´t think it will for long...

Cheers from Portland,
T
