For 1982, Honda made the XL 500 R. This was the last year that the XL 500 was made. In 83 it became the XL 600 R. Differences between the 82 and 81 "S" model include:

82: tank fenders and side covers all red
seat fork boots number plate and engine are all black
21" front 17" rear wheels
Pro-link (no additional reservoir) suspension
