I am no Expert but I have had and 82 Flt for 12 years. and have rebuilt the top end and the transmision [I had help with the trans} No you dont have to take the head and barrel of to change a rocker arm Maybe they got carried away takin stuff apart and didn´t notice the rocker arm issue until they got down farther than they needed to go. I´ve done dumb things like that. I think most shovelheads have had work on them through the years and amf/non amf issues are kind of worked out from the rebuilds they have had. If you are thinking of buying an Flt be aware that rear tire changes are a royal pain in the ass. If the rear drive sprocket wears out the cost for a new one is near 400 dollars because it has a running surface on it for the seals for the enclosed chain case. I like the 82 just fine because the shovel Flt has rubber mounted motor, 5 spd trans, dual front disc brakes and frame mounted fairing. The FLH of that era didn´t have those things. When you look in the catalouges for aftermarket parts there is not as much choice in parts and accesories because there wasn´t as many flts made. The frame mounted fairing is nice for protection. I removed mine a few years ago and made my bike look like a FLHS. [Road King style] Looks better but I´m not as protected from weather as i was. Overall I think an FLT is comfortable and reliable once the bugs are out of it. I hate bikes that people have ripped into the wiring for various reasons so I check for that Because I have no patience for fixing electrical that someone else butchered. Don´t pay as much for and FLT as you would for an 82 shovel FLh becuase they don´t have the resale value. Even though for the above reasons [5sp,dualdisc,rubbermnt] they are in my opinion a better bike. Just my 2cents worth that may make no sense Len they dont have as much resale value |
