filling it up

I have had a primo shape ´83 GX750ES for a little over 3 weeks, my first bike since ´80 and am so overwhelmed by it that I have put around 1000 miles on it. I have been reading everything I can find in the way of safety tips and hazard avoidance on the net. One tip I tried has to do with getting off the bike to fill it with gas, because if you spill gas and you are on the bike, then you can also be spilled on, and you have a chance of igniting. Formerly I had remained on the bike. The only time I have ever spilled gas was the one time I got off it to fill it. I am able to view and control the gas going into the tank if I am on the bike when doing so. I know that being a newbie for the second time around, I could be going against logic and experience, but I will continue to stay on the bike next to the pump with the side stand down, because again, I can both see and control the gas nozzle better than if I stand to the side. By the way, when I did spill gas on the tank, it ran down to the engine (just a little) and I took a paper towel and wiped it down several times and then waited. I didn´t need a campfire under my "como se llama") because it was already in the 90´s in the shade. Am I tempting fate by staying on the bike?
