I just picked myself up a 1983 GSX 550 with only 22k on the Odo. Everything was running fine the last time it was insured in 2005.

I seem to be having 2 issues with the bike. One is that the starter button seems to be working only intermittantly. I took it apart & the contacts are clean & the circuit is complete, so I am thinking that it must be somewhere in the wiring or the starter itself. Also, once it begins to crank, it works fine (basically I am able to keep the starter cranking as long as my finger is on the button), until I try to start it again. My question regarding this is, are there any known electronic issues with the starting circuit that I should focus on first? Could it be the clutch engagement mechanism?

The main problem I am having is that the bike doesn´t seem to want to catch. It turns over fine, and we were able to get the bike to idle with the gas tank removed, but when we put the gas tank back on (& hooked up the reserve & main fuel lines) it wouldn´t catch & the carburator overflow valves started spewing out gas (was throttling quitea bit, so maybe just flooded the carbs). I am just wondering if anyone can help guide me in teh right direction as to what to do next. Note that it did start & idle for 2 minutes with the gas tank removed.
