in italy the larger bike you can get up to 18 is a 125cc. and in mid eighties this was the fastest and most powerful 125 around. unbelievably noisy, it could get up to 12,000 rpm in each of the 6 gears -and everybody would turn and look at you when it did, you bet!- but it was also a very good bike. three discs brakes were a guarantee for safety and it would stick to the road well. it was my first bike: not easy to drive (you had to run it at at least 6,000 rpm to get some decent traction and acceleration, difficult for a beginner or in town) but i must say it taught me how to drive quite well. i could jump from it to an 1,100 bmw with a 10 years gap without problems.
i still own it and don´t have the heart to sell it yet....
