Solenoid issue

Cranked my Honda 650CX (failing to start) until battery went dead. Charged battery & when I went to re-connect battery cable the engine cranked! The ignition was off as was the start select switch. I checked out the push button start & it was working. Finally after tapping the start solenoid with a hammer, the motor no longer cranked when I attempted to connect the battery cable. My question is...why would there be juice to the solenoid with the ignition switch & start select switch off? Plus, the start push button not engaged. Would like to understand this better if anyone can help
