The belt drive worked great--maintenance almost as low as shaft drive. If it doesn´t come with the correct tension measuring tool, buy one. Adjustment isn´t needed very often (far less than lubrication of a chain!). The previous owner of my bike had abused it (got oil on it) which may have decreased its life--mine broke at 22,222 miles. Replacing was expensive. Manchester Honda was the cheapest I could find for the belt, and even then it was ~$225 just for the part if I remember correctly (that was late 1996). You probably could convert to chain, but with the sprockets you might spend close to what the new belt costs, and a new belt should give you less maintenance for 20k+ more miles. Despite what the Haynes manual says, you do NOT need to remove the exhaust to change the belt!
