Suggestions for more HP from my 84 xt250

I want to rebuild the top end and overhaul or replace the carb. What are the best ways to get more HP and torque out of my bike? When I rode two-strokes, it was a port and polish, and maybe a little over-bore, and a new pipe and silencer. Any suggestions on what to do with my four-stroke? Thanks.
