Setting timing on a Suzuki GN400 1981

Bought a 1981 GN400 for my gorlfriend to learn to ride on and cant get it to start. Has good compression, spark, and gas, but just spits fire out of the carbs. Im thinking timing. Anyone know how to set it? Cant find a manual. Thanks
