Carburetor Question

I am wondering if it is common / possible to replace the stock carbuetor with something more commong / tunable. I read somewhere online about the carb off a kawasaki klr600? any other suggestions? my dad has an SR500 and the carb looks like it is something that could work even. i appreciate any advice, thank you!
