Adam, if you are just getting a 1981 Suzuki running after it has been sitting for a long time, there are several things to do for safety purposes. It was only driven to church on Sunday by an old lady, and it was running just fine when I parked it will not save your life. What will save your life, is doing the things that all manufacturers recommend. Take your time and do a complete light maintenance check and service. Check all fluid levels and change if necessary, brake pad thickness, caliper mechanisms operating properly, lubricate all cables and moving parts, check the condition of all the wiring, contacts, bulbs, switches, flashers and clean the bike properly. If a bike is not used often enough, rats destroy wiring to build nests, and all kinds of insects build nests with dirt, twine, leaves and twigs ect and block inprotant air passages and drains ect. What ever is rubbing is not good and will leave you stranded with a bigger bill than what you are looking at now. It may be something minor that you can fix easily as you go through your normal maintenance. If you donĀ“t have a book try to find one on Ebay. The book has all the information about the bike you have now with extra gathered by years of trial and error. I know you are excited and ready to ride, but go about it the right way. If not, you may end up with plenty of time to think about it.
