corrosion on negative connection of battery

This message is for anyone with a clue, but Tom is usually the answer man. There is NO ELECTRIC CURRENT running through the bike when I turn the key on. All wires seem to connect where they should. Tom said it might be the generator, to which I have no idea how to replace, let alone check. The bike has been sitting for a week and when I went to check on it I noticed some heavy corrosion build up on the negative connection on the battery and the nut and bolt were very hot. Any ideas as to how to solve this electrical problem without bleeding away money? I´m at my wits end with this nightmare.
