battery losing power- i am new to bikes

81 xs850--- how do i test the stater -- and what to look for as far as wear. i bought the bike 2 years ago. left it sitting at parents home. THe battery isnt getting charged. tried new battery, checked wires from stater to battery(they look fine). But i remember the stater making noise when i first bought it.help please
