| The 254 was very a very light bike, all of the construction was plastic, including the fuel tank. There was a large flap that locked down over the filler. The bike ran very cleanly through the rev range and pulled well at all times. The displacement and relative torque meant that the gear box was usually quite active. Shuffling up and down through the gears while howling along at 8000 rpm gave very satisfying results. The front disk and brembo caliper, though both tiny did manage to stop the bike very effectively, leading towards mild flying on the rear wheel. Though the ground clearance on the street was great, rarely leading to touching the foot pegs to the ground, on the race track the Pirelli Mandrake and general handling allowed the foot pegs to be completely folded up. If you find one of these that runs and rides ok and you are fond of small bikes this Benelli is a great ride. I did about 20000km on the 254, before aquiring a Ducati 750 (1975)sport. If only finance and space allowed the me to keep them both. |
