A general post (partly in answer to Emanuel Robu´s post) for anyone new to Z500 maintenance: Z500 Spare parts: Forget trying to find another z500 to cannibalise spares - the bike was manufactured for nine months and there ain´t many about (B3 & B4 models excepted in Europe). However, there are thousands of other Kawasakis which will provide good spare parts to keep your bike running. Best of all are the Z550-A1 & Z400-J1(UK & Japan only)(both 1980) - replacement bikes to the discontinued Z500-B2: They are identical but for the engine and rear brake/wheel - Tubed tyres and identical wheels & front brakes (ALL later z550s used tubed tyres and different front brakes that won´t fit Most engine parts swap OK, but don´t stick a Z550 engine in: It has been SO overdone and an original Z500 is worth a dozen rat z550s anyday (z550 has ONE horsepower more than a Z500 and doesn´t rev as well. Some z650´s used the same rear wheel/brake and the early z250s used the same rear wheel. Later GPz550s & GT550s (Z550-G) have many bits that fit or can be bodged. Post 1990 550 Zephyrs are different bikes but based on the original Z500, so bits can be made to work. If you need bits, use eBay. I´m in the UK but regularly get parts from the USA (they only had the KZ550) or Germany as well. My recent eBay purchases include NOS seat, tank, crankcases, Rectifier, Speedo gearbox, primary & cam chains and a loom (all genuine K, all still sealed.... but that´s enough gloating). Plenty of second hand parts too, but you might have to wait a year to get what you want... Emanuels questions: Any old z550/gt550 exhaust should fit. Lots of 4-1 exhaust replacements available that will save weight over a 4-2. Oil filter is used throughout the (1980s) K range: P/N 16009-003 Kawasaki make a good manual but the Haynes & Clymer manuals are useable too. I´m currently rebuilding my second Z500 (the first one is used for commuting in London every day) so please feel free to ask questions. I´ll check my email every few months and might even sort out a website oneday. Kodex |
