Get a Clymer manual (#M404). It is very good. When I bought my ´81 XS850 about four years ago, the Yamaha dealer was still able to order most parts. This is a great bike. Lots of power and fun. My charging system wasn´t working and the bike would quit if the battery went below about 9v. It had a broken wire right at at the voltage regulator/rectifier block. I had to carefully chip away epoxy until I could solder a wire on. It has worked ever since. If it turns over OK, but doesn´t fire or backfires, charge the battery. Don´t use the kickstarter. This engine is too big and if the battery is weak, it can kick back and hurt your knee. (personal experience) If you still have second gear, shift carefully, I have heard that it goes out often on the 850 Specials. Have fun and good luck. |
