Hi Gus - My 2cents - I find old gas can cause starting problems. I normally leave fuel switch on "ON" however if you run it out of gas, turn it to "PRIME" for easier start then back to "RUN". As far as a tune-up, I would recommend buying a "Haynes" manual or similar. This way you can do your own tune-ups and also get to know your bike. As with any carb that sits, they almost certainly need cleaning. Here is where the manual comes in handy. I took mine apart and with a carb spray cleaner and a small wire they cleaned up excellent and I am by no means a mechanic. My bike is also a 1980 XS850 Special which I think means full fairing and bags. Good Luck, Allan |
