I currently own my second 79 sportster, and I would suggest going with a 38mm Bendix carb. The 79 came stock with a Keihin, however I have found that the Bendix, in fixed main jet form, performs great. You can strap it on, set it, and forget it. Check the J&P cycles catalog, or pull up a company from the net.
