Clymer books have an electric diagram in the back of them, but they aren´t very easy to use. I have a 78 400A and am also a drafter, so I redrew the diagram to make it easier to read. If you need the diagram let me know and I´ll hook you up.

To troubleshoot:
1. This may sound obvious, but the electric and kick starter won´t engage if the tranny is in gear.

2. Check the fuses under the LH side cover below the seat.

3. If the starter will kick in but the engine won´t run, check to see if there is spark from BOTH plug wires. If there is no spark, you can count on a dead ignition module. Expect a high price, IF they´re even made anymore, or find a bike salvage yard. We have one here in CO Springs, good luck finding a CB400 of any type.

4. If the starter won´t kick in, short the leads at the RUN/OFF switch. If the starter kicks in, replace the switch. This can be most any aftermarket switch.

5. If the starter still won´t kick in, trace the wires from the switch. You will have to remove the fuel tank to do this. You are looking for any cracked or abraided insulation.

6. If none of the above works, scream at it, kick it a few times, and threaten it with a sledge hammer, but don´t actually hurt it. Sell it for parts.
