New to KLR and first dual sport

Hi all!

I just picked up an ´84 KLR250 off Craigslist.

Seems to run great. Started cold in about 4 kicks with full choke. There is a little dried oil on the fork coverings but the seller said forks seals are good as did the shop he used to bring it to. Small oil leak at the engine, probably head gasket. Seller said oil levels remain pretty constant but I will keep an eye on it.
Supertrapp exhaust sounds lovely.
I´m excited for my new commuter bike! At 50 mpg reported it gets about double that of my liter bike in the city, and oddly, my insurance agent says I´ll SAVE $29 dollars per year by adding this bike to my coverage. Weird, huh? Some sort of incentive-based savings I think. I don´t get it. Well, I´m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Wondering which oil is best in this bike (regular, synthetic, blend)? I haven´t seen a shop manual yet but assume 10w/40 is best in SF. Which tires are preferable for (mostly city) dual sport riding? I definitely do want some knobby. What other small mods can make a diff right away? And suspension? I have never played with suspension before. It´s pretty soft on the KLR and it is likely I´ll go 2-up sometimes getting around town.

I´ll read some of your posts and pls. feel free to share your improvement ideas.

Cheers,
Evan
