After seven years riding a Yamaha Royal Star Venture, I traded it for a 2003 Ultra Classic. And yes, it IS ultra cool. Part of why I (and many others) ride motorcycles is because we are different - and cool. I got tired of people being dissapointd when finding out that my Royal Star Venture was not a Harley-Davidson. To them, Harley and Motorcycle are synonomous terms. That being said, the Venture was a fine motorcycle. In fact, both the Harley and the Yalmaha have superior points to each other. The Yamaha had two trip odometers to Harley´s one. The Yami bags are easier to open (but flimsy feeling). There is more room for the rider´s feet behind the fairing on the Yani too. But since this is about Harleys, I´ll say this - it´s a more modern motorcycle than you would think, and it works really well. It is limited however, by the constraints imposed on it by the definition of what Harley says the Ultra Classic should be. It should be an air cooled V-Twin with lots of idling vibration and 1950´s styling. In many other ways the Harley is a superior motorcycle. I would even say it handles better, until its very limited ground clearance restricts the lean-angle. It brakes better, has better instrumentation, better integration of the audio system. It has a lean-angle sensor for the turn signal cancellation, but the two button signaling drives me crazy! Also, there is no cancel button for the cruise control and no top gear indicator. It gets worse fuel mileage and needs premium fuel. The Tour Pack locking is a bit flimsy. But getting back to the positives, it sounds better and it says Harley-Davidson. It is also stronger! The engine guards are very strong and the bag guards have no give to them. Metal is used for the chrome trim pieces where plastic is used on the Yamaha. The plastic for the tour pack and bags is better, thicker, and fastened with Dzus fasteners. Better alternator power and better lighting all around. The quality of the switch gear feels much better too. And my goodness, the starter motor sounds right out of a Mack truck! THWACK - VROOM! Love it! Quality of paint and chrome is better. The security system is a great feature. Belt drive is better than shaft, especialy when the transverse engine is used because you need two ring/pinion sets and you loose 12% in each. So even though the Harley has less power at the crank, almost the same power ends up at the rear wheel. This is my honest appraisel of my newly purchased Ultra. I hope you find it informative. |
