Sputter, backfires, stalls

I just purchased an 87 FLHS (my first H/D) and bike has an issue. After start up bike runs fine for a short while (10 to 15 mins) then it shudders and stalls. Bike restarts with a backfire and after working thru this cycle runs okay.
Recently I took it on the highway to let it stretch its legs and it bogged down over 60 mph.
I. Checked the plugs, they are dry, black and sooty. And air cleaner is a K&N which shows a lot of light thru it.
I do not think its an electrical problem. I am leaning toward a fuel or carburetor issue and I just don´t know how to adjust or work on carbs.
Could this be anything else?
