Good ride for around town?

Hi, I´m thinking(seriously) about buying a 96 harley sportster 1200 and have a few concerns...

the one I want to purchase only has around 17 000Kms, 10 000 miles, and I´m wondering if the engine is good for a long time? any idea on the life of the v-twin they used that year?

I intend to use this bike to put around town and mostly do small trips (2-3 hours), and am 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weigh around 230 lbs.. is this bike too small? some people tell me yes, others no... I´m no dummy (well,, I think I´m not)and am aware that a touring bike would be more comfy, but am not planning to drive it on 7 hour drives...

Any assistance would be appreciated as I hope to enter the biker society again real soon.
