Have you taken it to the dealer to have diagnostics run? The weird part about the ´02 is that everything on the bike is straight from the ´40´s, with the exception of the computer...go figure. But the problem may be as simple as taking it to the shop and having them reprogram the computer. It may cost some money but it´ll be worth it.
