Rear Shocks?

Just purchased a 96 Sportster with what I assume are the original rear shocks. I think they are spent as they offer little cushion. What is my best and most affordable option? Replace shocks or can they be rebuilt? I´m assuming they are gas filled, not sure if they can be rebuilt easily.
