hello i am new to this forum, i ride a 85 xls, been rolling with her for 26 years. got a newer 05 but i go back to this old girl alot. the 05 is great just love that 85, kinda like a old friend i guess. i dont run her hard, i just dont think it was made to do 90+ for a any amount of time. this bike is completely original. had the oil pump changed out early on by h-d and had carb rebuilt. thats about it for major work. oil tires and fliud changes as usual. only problem that happened was on the way to work making a slow left turn the gear shift peg unscrewed, i reach for secound and off it came and my foot hit the ground and i went into a violent balancing act to not slide her on the ground, must of looked wild! oh jeez what a ride! went 100 or so feet and slowed up enought to land into a parked cars open window. the driver was scared to death as i was cussing and ranting on! no damage to the bike belive it or not. i parked collected myself and retrived the peg and had the shop weld it on for good. no more of that bull! long time rider any one got questions, i may be able to tell you by my experince from my bike. ride safe, be safe. john.
