I overhauled my R80 which had done 65 000 miles by then two years ago. Piston rings were a bit worn, cylinders were perfect but it was the valve guides which were very worn by then. Loose guides let the oil through to cylinders to be burnt and make the valves noisy as well. Guides and valves probably need changing at the same time.
