I have owned a 1986 R80RT for just under a year - so my experience is limited compare to some people - but however - if you like touring and put, put, putting around she is great. I have the full flarings and boxes and so far very little trouble having covered around 3000 miles. I had one problem with getting the petrol cap off - I had to drill the **** out and I later found out that a strong rope and a heave - takes it off as well. Another minor problem was the rear brake light switch - take the battery out first - then remove the switch and WD40 and she is grand again. I fitted new tyres (Metz) and change the oil with one of the bendy oil filters and that are made for the RT´s and that is the total maintenance for this year. She is a heavy bike - I have previously owned Suzukis, 125 and 250cc - but the R80 is much heaver. However I enjoy the full flaring - and if it rains, just keep above 40mph and you will stay dry! I also fitted heated grips and they come in handy at times too. Would I buy another R80? Yes - no problem. We paid £1000 for a 1986 with around 60000 miles - so that will give you a scale to work with. As far as performance goes - its my old bike and I don´t push her a lot. My brother has a BMW1150GS and she is obviously a lot quicker but at 7 times the price? If you like old bikes - this is a nice reliable machine. Cheers S.. |
