i purchased a 1979 xs400 that was made into a bobber style bike. i have a major issue as far as the charging system goes. i recieved a complete (running??) donor engine with the bike. i will just start off saying that i am no mechanic.

the bike starts and runs but only off of the battery. once the battery is dead it dies out. i took the bike to the local shop and he ran a series of tests on the eletrical. he assured me the stator was shot. so i took the other one out of the donor engine and brought it to him and he tested it and said it was good. is it even possible to test a stator while it is not in an engine that is running??????

i installed the one from the donor bike today and i have the same issue. i took the bike back to this \
