your fuel system is probably fine. I would guess that is the result of your timing being too advanced. If you have a dynamic timer (strobe light) you can use that, but I´d recommend against it and set the static timing with a cold engine. break out the feeler guages, crack open the contact breaker box (the box above the spark plug on the left side). You´ll need to open the alternator cover to access the nut for rotating the crankcase which means an oil change. Figure out where the LT and LF markings are for top dead center and the advance marks - oh, I am assuming your advance timing unit (the weird thing with the tension spring on the end of the cam shaft) is in good order (it snaps back when you turn and let go?) You can lube the moving parts, but just becareful around the contact points and the gauze holder: don´t just dowse the thing in oil, but make sure it is not bone dry. Once the gaps are set correctly for the left and right sides, then you can see about rotating the plates to set the timing. Most any service/workshop manual will cover this procedure. Just take the time to notice that the left and right contact plates rotate independantly, but are locked together. Finally, what none of the manuals will tell you, rotating the plate one hogs ass hair will effect 5-10 degrees of advance/retard, so make very small adjustments. http://www.dansmc.com also goes over a lot of the practical pitfalls to watch out for and how to eye/earball the settings.
Good luck and happy riding!
