Hi Scott,
I ride and wrench on a 1973 Ironhead Sportster.
The numbers in the VIN identify the model, 4A is an XLCH(kick only), 3A is an XLH(electric start), that said, it is possible to have a 4A with kick and electric(like mine does), but the starter has been added later.
The 1973 year had a mid year change in the cylinders and heads, an \
