GEARBOX FAULTS ON 74 SPORTSTER.

GEARBOX FAULTS ON 74 SPORTSTER.

Have bought a 74 Sportster and want to get it on the road, but i have found the gearbox is jumping out of 1st as soon as it starts to move, 2nd jumps sometimes.....whats most likely cause?
Is it a trait with them?
