reassemblying clutch basket on 1977 sportster XLCH 1000

I have a 1977 Harley sportster XLCH 1000, kick start only. I removed primary chain, primary sprocket, and clutch basket in order to replace kicker shaft bushings. I replaced bushing and then replaced primary sprocket, chain, and clutch basket. Finally, there is a spring loaded plate that needs to be compressed so the holes in the plate line up with the six bolts in the clutch basket. I need to know how to compress the springs (while lining up the final plate on the clutch basket).
