After not owning a bike for 25 years I bought a 93 Sportster 883 Hugger. I was looking for something easy to ride and with enough power to travel on the interstate if necessary. I just returned from a 500 mile trip that was almost spiritual in nature and have truely bonded with the bike. If you´re looking for a great all round bike you won´t be disappointed with a Sportster. The 883 purred along the whole way and got an average of 58 mpg. The power is adequate for a single rider and gear. I prefered to travel on the two lane state routes which afford you a glimpse of the small towns you have to slow down to pass through and 55 mph is a real nice cruising speed for this bike. I did have to take the interstate for a while and got blown around pretty badly by the 18 wheelers. If I planned on a trip primarily on the interstate I´d surely want a Road King. But small bikes have their place too and the Sportster is great around town and easy to get turned around in a small space. Also great for short riders who want to plant their feet at the stops. The stock seat was a little hard 150 miles into the trip and I´ll probably upgrade that before the next one. The gas tank is small and I needed to stop every 80-100 miles but that was actually a pleasure to get off the bike and stretch every hour or two. All in all I love this bike and would recommend it to anyone. It may be considered a girls bike by some but I see it as an economical and very maneuverable bike that´s a blast to ride and I´m glad I bought one.
